GTI welcomes more than 250 students for the new school year
The Global Training Initiative celebrated the start of the new school year by welcoming more than 250 students from all around the world for this new semester.
Most of those students are studying at the SKEMA US campus this fall. The GTI and the new SKEMA administration welcomed more than 220 SKEMA Business School students on Wednesday, August 14. This is the largest SKEMA fall cohort to date, and it marks the first year that the SKEMA students are starting classes at the same time as NC State students.
“We’re glad that the students are able to participate in the same welcome activities that are available to all incoming NC State students,” said GTI Director Michael Bustle.
One of those events includes the campus and community-wide Packapalooza, which featured free food and music. GTI staff, students, and volunteers helped staff the International Zone. Chancellor Randy Woodson also stopped by the GTI table to say hello and find out more about the International Cultural Leadership Project (ICLP).
The ICLP will bring together the GTI’s 250 students with NC State student volunteers. This year, participants are expected to contribute more than 600 volunteer hours to Triangle nonprofits, including a semester long endeavor with the US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants “Welcome Home Project.”
“This project gives our international and domestic students a chance to understand and help a family settle into life in the United States under very different circumstances from their own,” said ICLP Coordinator Kristine Sloan.
The GTI also welcomed 12 new Brazil Scientific Mobility Program (BSMP) students along with returning Brazilian students and interns with a “bate-papo” or “chat/conversation” at the beginning of the school year. The BSMP program has more than doubled this fall with more than 4,000 Brazilian undergraduates studying at universities across the US, according to Inside Higher Ed.
